Snow conditions in the mountains 24.4.2013

24.04.2013
On Monday it was still mostly cloudy with occasional precipitation, on Tuesday the sun shone. About 5 cm of snow fell in the high mountains, lower down the snow melted due to rain.

The snow cover continues to settle and, except in the high mountains, is mostly saturated to the ground.

At 2500 m in the Julian Alps there is about 360 cm of snow, at 1500 m up to 190 cm. Elsewhere in our mountains at 1500 m from 20 to 50 cm of snow. More snow in gullies, southern slopes are bare even above about 1400 m elevation.

The snow cover is mostly softened, only in the high mountains it is frozen in the morning and thus hard, during the day it softens. The snow is relatively well transformed.

Avalanche danger is mostly 1st degree. The snow cover is generally stable, during the day it softens and avalanche danger increases. On steep slopes with greater additional load you can trigger a wet snow avalanche. Dangerous are also cornices and areas with wind-blown snow as well as northern slopes where the snow has not slid so much yet.

Until Friday it will be clear and gradually warmer. The snow will continue to melt and settle. Avalanche conditions will not change much.

New report will be issued on Friday, 26.4.2013 in the morning.

General avalanche danger is 2nd degree on the European five-level scale.
