Snow conditions in the mountains 25.7.2011
25.07.2011
On Saturday afternoon, precipitation began to appear in western Slovenia, which intensified overnight into Sunday and spread across the entire country. With the passage of the cold front, a strong north to north-easterly wind blew, and the snow line temporarily dropped to around 1700 m above sea level. Below 2000 m, the snow melted on contact, while higher up, locally more than 30 cm of snow fell. Due to the windy conditions during snowfall, larger drifts formed especially on the highest peaks, where snow depth can exceed half a meter.
In the coming days, temperatures will gradually rise, and the snow that fell yesterday will melt. It will persist for a few days only on the highest shady peaks and where it was wind-blown.
Until the snow melts, we advise against ascents to the highest peaks of the Julian Alps.
