Snow conditions in the mountains 26.10.2011
27.10.2011
Yesterday and today there were again precipitations in the mountains, only the eastern part of the Karawanks and Savinja Alps as well as Pohorje were mostly dry.
Elsewhere the snow line rose to around 2500 m above sea level. Snow lower down got soaked and melted. Higher up it first snowed, but the snow turned to rain. New snow fell only a few centimeters, mostly it rained below 2500 m. Thus, some new snow only on the highest peaks. In the eastern part of our mountains the snow settled and melted, but more slowly than in areas with rain.
In the Julian Alps there is up to around 70 cm of snow at 2500 m, around 10 cm at 1500 m. Elsewhere also around 10 cm of snow at 1500 m. Lower down the snow has diminished. The snow cover is soft, the snow is wet. Avalanche danger has increased due to rain which soaked the snow and saturated the snow cover to the ground. Especially on steeper grassy slopes wet snow can slide, ground avalanches possible. Above 2500 m the possibility of slabbing will increase mainly in the Julians due to new snow.
Tomorrow precipitations will subside and for the weekend the weather will be dry. Snow will remain in the south and on steep slopes individual wet snow avalanches may still release.
New report will be issued as needed.
General avalanche danger is 2nd degree on the European five-level scale.
