Snow conditions in the mountains 26.4.2013
26.04.2013
In sunny and warm weather, the snow cover has settled and melted. Individual wet snow avalanches have still been released from steep slopes, but mostly the snow has already slid off. The snow cover freezes only in the high mountains at night, but thaws during the day. The snow is soaked through to the ground.
At 2500 m in the Julian Alps there is about 360 cm of snow, at 1500 m about 180 cm. Elsewhere in our mountains at 1500 m there is from 10 to 40 cm of snow. More snow is in the shady slopes, southern slopes are bare even above sea level around 1400 m.
The snow cover is mostly softened, only in the high mountains it is frozen in the morning, but softens during the day. The snow is relatively well transformed.
Avalanche danger is mostly level 1. The snow cover is generally stable, but softens during the day and avalanche danger increases slightly especially on steep, sun-exposed slopes. There, with greater additional stress, you can trigger a wet snow avalanche. Cornices are also dangerous.
Today conditions will remain unchanged, tomorrow and Sunday will be cloudier with occasional precipitation. The snow line will drop to sea level around 2300 m. Higher up, snow will stabilize due to cooling, lower down due to rain it will become additionally soaked and slab avalanches from steep slopes may occur. Monday and Tuesday will gradually warm up again with more sun, but in the afternoon mainly in the west there will still be local showers. No greater avalanche danger is expected.
New report will be issued on Wednesday, 30.4.2013 in the morning.
General avalanche danger is level 2 on the European 5-level scale.
