Snow conditions in the mountains 28.11.2012

28.11.2012
In the last 48 hours there have been occasional precipitation in most of our mountains, more frequent and pronounced in the Julian Alps. The snow line was initially at around 2000 m above sea level, but gradually descended to around 1800 m. In the high mountains it mostly snowed. In the Julians, 10 to over 30 cm of snow fell during this period, elsewhere in our mountains up to about 15 cm. Mostly it snowed on bare ground, only in some cirques and on higher plateaus there was some old snow.

A consolidated snow cover exists mostly only above around 2000 m.

There is practically no avalanche danger even above this altitude. The snow is soft.

There will be some precipitation today during the day, when up to about 10 cm of snow can fall above around 1800 m, and in the Julians even more than 20 cm. Especially in the Julian Alps, the avalanche danger on steep slopes above 2000 m above sea level will therefore probably increase slightly. During snowfall, a south to southwest wind will blow, so drifts will form especially on the northern sides of ridges. Occasional precipitation will occur mainly in the Julians and western Karawanks also on Thursday, when the snow line will be even lower, at around 1100 m. Up to about 10 cm of snow can fall. The new snow will settle gradually.

The new report will be issued on Friday, 30.11.2012.

The general avalanche danger is low, i.e. degree 1 on the European five-degree scale.
