Snow conditions in the mountains 28.3.2011
28.03.2011
On Saturday it was mostly sunny and warm, on Sunday cloudy and foggy without significant precipitation. The snow cover has been settling and transforming slowly.
In the Julian Alps at 2500 m there is about 400 cm of snow, at 1500 m about 100 cm. The most snow is in the Soča Valley. Elsewhere in our mountains at 1500 m there is still up to 10 cm of snow, but sun-exposed slopes are bare even higher. Snow in the high mountains is mostly covered with a crust that does not support human weight. Only in some gullies it is still dry and soft. Lower down, snow is frozen in the morning and softens during the day.
Avalanche danger is 2nd degree everywhere in the high mountains. Lower, where there is little snow, it is 1st degree. An avalanche can be triggered by additional load on the snow cover especially on steeper slopes and places with wind-blown snow. Especially in the morning and forenoon there is also danger of slips on wind-packed areas.
Today it will be cloudy and foggy with light precipitation. Snow line around 1500 m. Up to 5 cm of snow possible. Tomorrow it will gradually clear up. Avalanche conditions will not change much until Wednesday morning.
Next report will be issued on Wednesday, March 30, 2011.
General avalanche danger is 2nd degree on the European five-degree scale.
