Snow conditions in the mountains 28.4.2011
28.04.2011
With the cooling, the snow line in the mountains persisted at altitudes between 2000 and 2300 m. Occasional local showers brought a few centimeters of new snow to some high mountain areas, otherwise the snow was slowly melting and disappearing, except in the highest parts of our mountains.
In the Julian Alps, at 2500 m there is about 270 cm of snow, at 1500 m about 10 cm. North-facing slopes are bare even higher.
Elsewhere in our mountains, snow at 1500 m is only present in some gullies.
North-facing slopes are bare above 2000 m. The snow cover is mostly well transformed, except in shady areas of the high mountains.
Especially above sea level around 2000 m, the snow is frozen, and due to cloudier weather, it can remain hard all day.
Avalanche danger is level 1. The snow is stable.
In the morning and part of the forenoon, the surface is hard with a risk of slipping; in the higher parts of the high mountains, the surface is hard all day.
Variable weather will continue. Local showers will occur, snowy above about 1700 m. Locally, the surface snow cover characteristics will change slightly due to new snow. The snow line will be at altitudes between 2000 and 2400 m. Snow will continue to melt lower down, while in the high mountains the situation will not change much.
The next report will be issued on Monday, 2 May 2011.
General avalanche danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale.
