Snow conditions in the mountains 29.12.2016
29.12.2016
General avalanche danger level - Thursday, 29. 12. 2016
Danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale - LOW.
Main problem: favourable conditions
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is level 1, LOW. The snowpack is stable and mostly hard and partially icy. Therefore, high risk of slips.
Snow conditions
There is little snow in the mountains, mostly only above about 2300 m, only in the Julian Alps and partially in gullies lower. Snow is mostly frozen, partially also icy, only on days when it is warmer in the heights, the snowpack softens somewhat on sun-exposed slopes. The existing snowpack is stable.
Forecast weather development
No significant precipitation for the time being. On Wednesday, it will be mostly cloudy in the eastern and central parts of our mountains, quite clear in the western Karawanks and in the Julians. Some light snowfall on Pohorje and partially in the eastern Karawanks on Wednesday or until Thursday night, but the amount will be negligible. From today to Thursday, strong north winds will blow mainly in the high mountains. From Friday to Sunday, there will again be a distinct temperature reversal, cooling on Monday.
Trend of snow conditions
Snow will remain mostly frozen and hard, only on southern slopes it may soften somewhat during the day. The snowpack will remain stable and partially icy, avalanche danger LOW. There will still be risk of slips due to the hard and partially icy snowpack, and on wind-packed ridges. Risk of slipping also on grassy slopes, because salt can form overnight, on northern sides there is partially ice on the grass.
