Snow conditions in the mountains 3.12.2012

3.12.2012
After light snowfall overnight into Saturday, it started snowing more noticeably on Sunday during the day. The total amount of precipitation was not very large, but the temperature was low, zero was a little above the lowlands, in the high mountains below -10 degrees, so the snow was dry, in the high mountains very light indeed, and therefore the increase in the snow cover was greater. In total, 20 to over 30 cm fell in the high mountains of the Julian Alps, less of course in the hills and lowlands. It snowed on a soft base, so the snow mostly bonded well with the base. The north and east wind created drifts mainly on the southern and western sides of ridges and passes.

For now, there has been no significant sliding.

The consolidated snow cover mostly extends to the lowlands, where it is very thin. At 1500 m above sea level, there is mostly 20 to 40 cm of snow, at 2500 m in the Julians up to about 130 cm. The snow is light and soft. There is a lot of wind-blown snow. Avalanche danger is 2nd degree in the high mountains above about 2000 m, lower down 1st degree. Especially dangerous are places with wind-blown snow on steeper slopes particularly on the southern and western sides of ridges and peaks.

Today it will be dry, tomorrow and overnight into Wednesday it will snow again transiently. Expected 10 to 20 cm of snow. This time more precipitation in the southern half of Slovenia. The snow will be dry. Initially moderate southwest wind, which will turn northward.

New drifts will form.

New report will be issued on Wednesday, 5.12.2012.

General avalanche danger is 2nd degree on the European five-level scale.
