Snow conditions in the mountains 3.4.2017
3.04.2017
General danger level - Monday, 3. 4. 2017
Danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.
Main problem: wet snow
Danger pattern: Spring situation
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is LOW in the morning and partly forenoon, level 1. During the day, due to daytime warming and solar radiation especially on sun-exposed slopes, it increases to MODERATE, level 2. Steep slopes and places with wind-drifted snow on sun-exposed aspects are particularly hazardous. On steeper slopes full-depth wet snow avalanches are possible.
Snow conditions
Snow, except in shady high mountain areas, is quite well transformed. Snow cover is mostly frozen and hard in the morning, possibly icy. During the day it softens especially on sun-exposed aspects. Snow cover depth is uneven, on wind-exposed sites even in high mountains bare in places.
Expected weather development
Today still sunny, from tomorrow onwards more variable cloudiness with local precipitation, partly showers, possibly thunder tomorrow. Gradually cooling slightly. Coldest on Thursday with freezing level around 1500 m. On Friday sunnier again and warmer during the day.
Trend in snow conditions
Snow cover is relatively stable, but due to high temperatures daytime somewhat labile especially under sun influence on sunny aspects. At night refreezes and is hard in the morning, locally possibly icy. Snow cover melts quickly. From steep slopes wet snow avalanche possible, even full-depth, as snow cover lower down saturated to the ground. No major changes in avalanche conditions expected until Monday. From tomorrow less sun influence, air mass gradually somewhat cooler. Thus daytime less labile and snow cover mostly stable.
