Snow conditions in the mountains 3.5.2013

3.05.2013
In sunny and warm weather, the snow cover is settling and melting.

A considerable amount of snow has melted. At night, snow freezes only in the high mountains.

At 2500 m in the Julian Alps there is around 280 cm of snow, at 1500 m up to 90 cm. Elsewhere in our mountains at 1500 m around 20 cm of snow. More snow in shady areas, south slopes are bare above 1500 m.

The snow cover is mostly softened, at night frozen in the high mountains and in frost pockets. The snow is relatively well transformed.

Avalanche danger is mostly 1st degree. The snow cover is stable. During the day it softens and therefore avalanche danger increases slightly mainly on steep, sunny slopes. There, with greater additional load, you can trigger a wet snow avalanche, but the chances are relatively small.

Similar weather on Saturday too, on Sunday more cloudy, so the sun will not have as much daily influence on the snow cover. The snow will continue melting, remaining relatively stable.

New report will be issued on Monday, 6.5.2013 in the morning.

General avalanche danger is 1 on the European five-degree scale.
