Snow conditions in the mountains 5.12.2012
5.12.2012
Yesterday it snowed. 5 to about 15 cm of snow fell, a bit more in the Notranjski hribi. A west to north-west wind blew, which especially in the high mountains on exposed spots created wind slabs. Temperature was below zero, so the snow in the high mountains was dry, lower down initially wet, so it bonded better to the ground there. The snow cover has settled somewhat.
Consolidated snow cover reaches the lowlands. At 1000 m asl there is about 20 cm of snow, at 1500 m mostly 30 to 50 cm, at 2500 m in the Julijci up to about 130 cm. The snow is light and soft. There is a lot of wind-blown snow. Avalanche danger is mostly level 2. Especially dangerous are spots with wind-blown snow on steeper, bare or grassy slopes.
Until Saturday night there will be no significant precipitation, today and tomorrow only isolated snow showers. Tomorrow afternoon it will cool a bit more, the north wind will strengthen.
Therefore new wind slabs will form especially on the south sides of ridges and passes. The snow cover will settle a little, but will transform very slowly. The snow will remain mostly soft, only on wind-exposed spots a thin crust may form.
New report will be issued on Friday, 7.12.2012.
General avalanche danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale.
