Snow conditions in the mountains 6.11.2012
6.11.2012
At the end of the week, there was very warm weather with occasional precipitation. The snow line temporarily rose above the highest peaks, but on Monday afternoon it descended, with occasional snowfall even below 1000 m in places. Much snow melted due to high temperatures and rain, in many places all of it, but towards the end of the precipitation, 5 to about 15 cm fell again.
The freezing level is currently at around 1800 m above sea level.
The new snow is soft. Since it was wet at first, it adhered well to the base. The avalanche risk is low. There is relatively little snow in the mountains, currently from about 10 to 30 cm.
In the coming days, it will be dry and initially cooler. The freezing level will be approximately between 1400 and 1600 m. On Wednesday during the day, warming will begin, and on Thursday the freezing level will already be around 3000 m. The air will be dry, so during the thaw the snow will not melt quickly but will slowly transform and freeze at night. A surface crust will form.
The next report will be issued on Friday, 9.11.2012.
The general avalanche danger is degree 1 on the European five-level scale.
