Snow conditions in the mountains 6.5.2013
6.05.2013
On Friday and Saturday there was some sun in the mountains, on Sunday mostly cloudy weather. The snow line was high, mostly at the height of the highest peaks. There was occasional rain. Snow melted quickly and disappeared.
At 2500 m in the Julian Alps up to about 250 cm of snow, at 1500 m up to 80 cm. Elsewhere in our mountains at 1500 m up to about 20 cm of snow. Consolidated snow cover is mostly in the high mountains and in shady aspects and on plateaus. Sunny slopes are bare above 1500 m.
The snowpack is well transformed and stable. Avalanche danger is mostly 1st degree. During the day in sunny weather it softens slightly and therefore avalanche danger increases slightly mainly on steep, sunny slopes of the high mountains. There with greater additional stress you can trigger a wet snow slab avalanche, but probabilities are relatively low.
Today cloudy with occasional precipitation. Tomorrow more sun, still local showers. Even sunnier weather on Wednesday and Thursday, from Friday to Saturday again some precipitation.
Presumably the snow line may drop briefly below 2000 m. The snowpack will continue melting, less and less snow in the mountains. On Saturday morning some new snow in the high mountains.
New report will be issued on Friday, 10.5.2013 in the morning.
General avalanche danger is 1st degree on the European five-point scale.
