Snow conditions in the mountains 9.11.2012

9.11.2012
After the recent precipitation at the beginning of the week, it was dry weather in the mountains and it warmed up quickly. The snowline was already at around 2200 m above sea level mid-week, and during the day the temperature rose above freezing even at around 2500 m. The snow cover melted on sun-exposed slopes, while in shaded areas it transformed and settled.

There is little snow in the mountains. In the high mountains of the Julian Alps, there is up to around 30 cm, but mostly on plateaus and shady slopes, less on sun-facing slopes. Elsewhere in our mountains there is considerably less snow, and south-facing slopes are mostly bare even up to the highest peaks, or snow lies mainly in gullies and drifts. There is no avalanche danger.

Even with precipitation on Sunday and Monday, the snowline will, it seems, remain high, presumably at around 2500 m above sea level. Therefore, it will snow only on the highest peaks, lower down most of the snow will melt.

A new report will be issued as needed.

The general avalanche danger is low, i.e., 1st degree on the European five-level scale.
