Snow conditions in the mountains 9.12.2011

9.12.2011
At the beginning of the week, with the passage of a cold front, the snow line briefly dropped to an altitude of about 600 m.

In the mountains, about 5 cm of snow fell. Where it snowed lower, it just whitened.

In the Julian Alps, at 2500 m there is up to about 70 cm of snow, but the consolidated blanket of old snow is mostly only on plateaus and in gullies, on sun-facing slopes there is little of it. On the old, mostly hard and transformed base, there is about 5 cm of new snow. A significant snow cover is only in the high mountains, above 2000 m. In shady spots, the old snow is hard and therefore there is a risk of slipping.

In the coming days, cloudy weather will prevail, especially in the western and southern parts of the Julian Alps and the foothills, there will occasionally be minor precipitation. The snow line will be at an altitude of about 2000 m.

Lower down, the new snow will mostly melt, above about 1800 m a few centimeters of snow will fall. There will be no other major changes.

The new report will be issued on Monday, December 12, 2011.

The general avalanche danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale.
