Snow conditions in the mountains, Friday 19.11.2010

19.11.2010
After Monday, the weather in the mountains was mostly cloudy and occasionally foggy.
It snowed on Tuesday and Wednesday, initially around 2200 m, and towards the end of the precipitation down to around 1600 m. In the Julians, up to around 35 cm of snow fell at 2500 m.
It snowed also last night up to an altitude of around 1300 m. In the Julian Alps, up to 15 cm of snow fell at 1500 m, up to around 25 cm at 2500 m, and elsewhere less than 10 cm at 1500 m. From Tuesday onwards, the snow line was around 2000 m, and last night it dropped to 1500 m. Below 2000 m, most of the snow melted during the week, while higher up it temporarily got wet and settled.
In the high mountains of the Julian Alps, there is up to around 150 cm of snow at 2500 m, and up to around 15 cm at 1500 m. Elsewhere in our mountains, around 5 cm of snow at 1500 m, more on the peaks. The snow cover is soft, the older snow beneath the new is frozen and crusty. There are many wind slabs in the high mountains, wind-exposed locations are quite scoured, sometimes down to the ground.
The avalanche danger is 2nd degree in the high mountains of the Julian Alps, and 1st degree elsewhere. The snowpack is mostly stable, the possibility of triggering an avalanche is mainly on steeper slopes and at places with wind-blown snow in the high Julians.
Today it will be mostly dry, with minor precipitation mainly in the western and southern parts of the Julian Alps. Tomorrow it will be mostly dry but predominantly cloudy. The snow line will be at around 1600 m altitude. The snow will remain dry and light. The southwest wind will continue to form wind slabs. On Sunday it will be cloudy with precipitation that will continue into Monday. The snow line will mostly be between 900 and 1200 m. By Monday morning, 10 to 40 cm of snow may fall, the most in the western and central Julians and the western Karawanks. Therefore, the avalanche danger will increase there.
The next report will be issued on Monday, 22 November.

The general avalanche danger is moderate, i.e. 2nd degree on the European five-level scale.
