Snow conditions in the Tržič municipality area 15.12.2021

15.12.2021
Avalanche Bulletin 9, Wednesday 15.12.2021 at 9:00 for the Tržič Municipality area.

General avalanche danger in the Tržič Municipality area above 1700 m is 3rd degree on the five-level European scale, below 1700 m it is 2nd degree.

In the last two days, daytime air temperatures at 1500 m have risen to +5°C, cooling at night, which has contributed to good transformation of the snowpack. The snowpack has settled and transformed. Due to solar radiation and consequently slightly higher temperatures on sun-exposed slopes, numerous ground avalanches have been released (slope >30°). In shady areas above 1100 m, snow froze yesterday afternoon despite positive air temperatures. A fairly thick crust formed that we could not penetrate. In the high mountains, especially on shady slopes, snow remained dry in places. Ridges and some slopes are wind-packed to hard base. In gullies, there is still wind-drifted snow and weak layers have formed there.

Today in the mountains above Tržič it will be partly clear, in the mid-mountains fog will persist until around noon. Air temperature at 1500 m will be around -1°C, with light northerly to north-easterly wind. At 2000 m it will be clear, around -2°C, with wind from northerly directions up to 40 km/h. Tomorrow and Friday more sun.

In the mid-mountains, snow is settling and transforming. Snow transformation will continue in the coming days. Snow layers will bond well by the end of the week as air temperatures drop. Individual ground avalanches can still be expected on sun-exposed slopes, especially tomorrow when the sun affects the snow surface. Transformation is slower in the high mountains, where snow will remain dry in places, especially in gullies and hollows. In these areas, slab avalanches can be triggered with additional load. In the mid-mountains above 1100 m, the snow surface may be icy or crusted. Be cautious and use equipment suitable for such conditions. Avoid walking under sun-exposed slopes, as the snowpack is unstable on certain steep slopes. Avalanche danger will gradually decrease.
