Snow conditions in the Tržič Municipality area 18.4.2023

19.04.2023
General avalanche danger in the Tržič Municipality area above the treeline is CONSIDERABLE, 3rd degree on the five-level European scale. Below the treeline it will be MODERATE, 2nd degree.

The snowpack is settling and melting. The zero isotherm height was high today and yesterday as well. Wet snow avalanches have been releasing spontaneously, reaching low elevations in places (Košuta ridge, Begunjščica). Snow-covered slopes were unstable.
The snowpack has also been melting faster with decreasing elevation. Water is percolating through the snowpack and snow density is increasing. Loose snow is almost gone even in the high mountains. Below 1200 meters there is little or no snow left.

Tomorrow, on Wednesday, it will be partly clear in the morning. The sun will affect the snowpack on sun-exposed slopes. Air temperature at 1500 meters will be around 5°C, at 2000 meters around 0°C. Moderate NE wind will blow. In the afternoon, precipitation will reach us. Air temperature will drop slightly. The zero isotherm height will fall to approximately 1300 meters overnight into Thursday. On Thursday it will be cloudy with precipitation. The snow line will be around 1300 meters in the morning hours. From Wednesday afternoon to Thursday midday, up to 15 cm of snow can fall. Slightly more in the high mountains. Midday air temperature will be around +1°C at 1500 meters, around -1°C at 2000 meters. In the high mountains, S wind up to 30 km/h will blow.

The snowpack will also be moist tomorrow. Solar radiation will further melt the snow and density will increase. We expect wet snow avalanches to release on all slopes, regardless of aspect. In the evening hours we expect precipitation. New snow will fall on a wet snow base and will further load the old snowpack. On sufficiently steep slopes, avalanches will release spontaneously.
Under the new snow, the snowpack will remain wet. In the high mountains, above 2000 meters, a thin crust will form that will not hold human weight. On Thursday afternoon, air temperatures will rise slightly again and the zero isotherm height will be above 1900 meters already on Thursday evening. Snow below this elevation will become moist by Friday morning. Humidity will also be high, strongly affecting the snowpack. We expect spontaneous avalanches also overnight into Friday.
Avalanche danger will be CONSIDERABLE, 3rd degree above the treeline, and 2nd degree below the treeline.
We advise against visiting the high mountains in the coming days.
