Snow conditions in the Tržič Municipality area 7.1.2022

7.01.2022
Avalanche Bulletin 20, Friday 7.1.2022 at 7:30 for the Tržič Municipality area.

The general avalanche danger in the Tržič Municipality area is 3rd degree on the five-degree European scale!

Above 1800 meters there is a lot of wind-blown snow, especially under northern slopes and under southern slopes of ridges, where the wind deposited snow. Wind slabs have formed on these parts. Above this altitude, snow fell on icy or hard ground and is very poorly bonded. A critical layer has formed. Due to low temperatures, it is slowly settling in leeward positions. Transformation is also slow.
The northern wind, which was stronger yesterday during the day, continued to transport snow and build new avalanche problems. Ridges are scoured somewhere to hard, icy or bare ground. Some small spontaneous wind slab avalanches have released.
Even in the mid-mountain zone there are many snow deposits and drifts. Wind slabs have formed. Yesterday during the day, snow at lower altitudes was somewhat more surface wet due to high air humidity. Locally, a thin crust formed.

This morning it will be clear and very cold in the Tržič mountains. Air temperature at 1500 meters will be around -7°C, occasionally a light wind will blow not exceeding 10 km/h. At 2000 meters, air temperature during the day will be around -10°C, but during the day a southern wind up to 15 km/h will blow. Tomorrow there will be somewhat more clouds. It will still be cold and the wind will strengthen somewhat and blow from the north.

Snow conditions in the high mountains above 1800 meters are still demanding and unpredictable. Even in the coming days, due to fairly low temperatures, the snow will slowly transform and bond. Especially tomorrow, when a somewhat stronger wind will blow, it will still transport snow into drifts and build new wind slabs. Here, even with additional minor loading of the snowpack, you can trigger a wind slab avalanche. Locally, there will still be greater avalanche danger.
Even at lower altitudes there is a lot of wind-blown snow. Especially be careful on all slopes with wind-blown snow and incline over 35°. Even on these parts, there is a high probability that with additional loading you will trigger a wind slab avalanche. For hiking in such conditions, you need additional knowledge and a lot of experience! Some slopes are scoured to hard or bare ground. Low temperatures will persist even in the mid-mountain zone. Snow will transform and bond very slowly. Avalanche danger will decrease very slowly. Below 1000 meters there is less snow, so avalanche danger there is 1st degree.
Be careful, current avalanche conditions are demanding due to wind and low temperatures!
