Successful re-greening of the surface on Uskovnica mountain pasture

24.07.2026
Among the meadows we are restoring is also the plot on Uskovnica mountain pasture, where the local meadow had become overgrown with forest due to abandonment of use. The flowering meadow is already a real feast for the eyes and for pollinators
Restoration of degraded meadow areas represents an important part of activities within the LIFE FOR SEEDS project, in which the Public Institute Triglavski narodni park also participates. Across the entire Slovenia, within the project we are restoring as much as 74.1 hectares of meadow areas, in the area of the park approximately seven hectares.

The success of restoration and the state of vegetation on the meadows is monitored with vegetation surveys, which we carried out in Triglavski narodni park with the help of project partners every year of the project. This year too, we visited all meadows under restoration with the Društvo za opazovanje in proučevanje ptic Slovenije (DOPPS) during the optimal development of plants (June and July) and recorded the plant species present there.

Among the meadows we are restoring is also the plot on Uskovnica mountain pasture, where the local meadow had become overgrown with forest due to abandonment of use. At the beginning of the project (2022) we encountered forest clearing in the area, from which we removed tree stumps in 2023 and mechanically mulched it. In the same year we spread fresh mown biomass (so-called green mulch) on the prepared surface, which we brought from a donor meadow in good condition on Vogar. The green mulch method proved to be very successful, as already in 2024 we could admire the re-greened surface. Annual progress of vegetation can also be observed in the surveys: this year we recorded more than 90 different plant species in the area, and the flowering meadow is already a real feast for the eyes and for pollinators.

In addition to vegetation surveys, the success of meadow area restoration within the LIFE FOR SEEDS project will also be evaluated with two additional indicators: surveys of birds and selected insects, and the results will be presented in the final project report.
