Ten medals from the youth world championship
Sara Čopar, Lucija Tarkuš, Timotej Romšak and Liza Novak have once again reached the highest places at the sport climbing world championship in Russia and brought home as many as ten medals. "Even though they had already shown on previous competitions that they are in good form, the medals were not a given. The atmosphere in the team is extremely good, the competitors encourage each other, so we are really immensely happy for every medal," summarized the youth national team selector Anže Štremfelj.
The world youth championship has ended in Voronezh, Russia. Members of the Slovenian national team have brought home new medals after the successful European championship in May this year, six medals from individual disciplines and four more in combination.
"After excellent results at the European championship and appearances in the European Cup, our expectations were consequently high. But at the same time, we knew the competition would be tougher, so we were realistically optimistic," summarized the expectations before the championship by the youth national team selector Anže Štremfelj.
The most successful was 16-year-old Sara Čopar, who became a double world champion at the youth world climbing championship. After winning the first title in lead, she became champion in combination (lead, bouldering, speed) and world runner-up in bouldering. "I certainly didn't expect such success. Before the championship, I had three goals: to lower my speed result below 9 seconds, to reach the final in bouldering and lead," explained Sara Čopar, who regularly trains speed at the Climbing Center Celje. "Speed is not my favorite discipline, but I regularly use it for warm-up training. As for improving fitness." She gets better at speed every year and also achieved her best result in Russia. "The start of the competition was very stressful, I was nervous, shaking, and I didn't even know how I had climbed. But when I made the first result, I felt much more confident. I also like that the members of the Slovenian team supported me loudly. Our team is definitely the loudest, and with such support behind me, everything is much easier." Sara will participate in a competition in Portugal at the beginning of October. Last week, she participated in the World Cup event in Kranj, where she finished 23rd.
Lucija Tarkuš won a silver medal in lead, third in bouldering and second in combination. Lucija has already had some appearances in the senior national team, where she is collecting good results. Most recently, she climbed to 25th place in Kranj.
Timotej Romšak brought bronze from Russia in lead, the same as Liza Novak. Both also won third place in combination.
"We must know that such a competition lasts 12 days, and if the start is good, it is a bit easier for each subsequent competitor. The atmosphere within the national team was very good. When the first results came, a good feeling was triggered and the medals followed. The team is great, the vast majority of members are very motivated, they cheer for each other and support each other. Which is certainly not a given," concluded selector Štremfelj.
