Timetables in the Alps 2016

26.05.2016
On the occasion of Alpine Convention Day, the eighth edition of the "Timetables in the Alps" booklet has been released today, containing 48 bus, train, cable car, and ferry lines through the Slovenian Alps and across the border. The booklet has also been upgraded this year – we have added 9 lines domestically and abroad, but unfortunately 4 lines have been discontinued.

In addition to its content promoting the use of public passenger transport, the project can also be praised for uniting the interests of 21 different partners. Together we pursue the goals of sustainable mobility and are aware that its effects are long-term and visible only after a longer period. Unfortunately, this year's discontinued lines indicate that perhaps a different approach or simply more persistence is needed. The discontinued lines are the so-called Hop-on Hop-off lines in Radovljica, to Pokljuka from Bled and Bohinj, and to Kamnik. We hope that every unsuccessful attempt leaves at least new lessons learned. The fact that actors and decision-makers in the transport sector must primarily be aware of is that changing travel habits is a long-term process. Interestingly, on the other hand, we observe expressed interest in extending the timetable's validity in certain areas, for example over Vršič. However, the interest of tourism workers, tourists, or locals alone is unfortunately not enough to break the rigidity of the responsible stakeholders, whether carrier, municipality, or state. With our project, we therefore aim to nudge and encourage cooperation among the various involved parties, without which (long-term again) it won't work.

This year, the importance of sustainable mobility in the sensitive alpine space has been recognized by CIPRA Slovenija, Permanent Secretariat of the Alpine Convention, Slovenian Tourist Organisation, Alpine Association of Slovenia, Triglav National Park, Kärnten Bus, local tourist organisations Bled, Bohinj, Bovec, Idrija, Jesenice, Jezersko, Kranj, Kranjska Gora, Ljubljana, Maribor, Preddvor, Slovenj Gradec, Solčavsko, Sotočje and Tržič.

The booklet in Slovenian and English versions is available at all partner organisations, in addition also in electronic form below, on the websites of CIPRA Slovenija and all partners. It is also accessible via QR code.
