To the Julian Alps by Public Transport

28.07.2011
For the third consecutive year, CIPRA Slovenia together with partners has published the booklet Timetables in the Julian Alps. The booklet contains timetable data for the fourteen most frequently used public passenger transport lines in the Julian Alps, 10 bus and 4 railway lines. CIPRA Slovenia and the Alpine Association of Slovenia have joined forces and also issued an English version of the timetables for all those coming to us from abroad.

Timetables of public transport services to mountaineering points of interest.

People have enjoyed travelling since time immemorial. Over time, we have developed many ways to make travel fast, comfortable and safe. This same mobility, however, is becoming an ever greater problem. Tourist hotspots are attractive for carrying out tourist and leisure activities, while at the same time facing increased visitor numbers. Increased tourist visits also bring negative consequences – crowds, unregulated parking, poorer air quality ... Some municipalities in the Julian Alps area have therefore already set out on the path of traffic calming. Within the Dynalp2 project, the municipalities of Bohinj, Bovec and Kranjska Gora have prepared groundwork in the areas of legislation, public transport, business plans and a general model for traffic calming in the Julian Alps. An important part of traffic calming and sustainable mobility is public passenger transport and its use.

Reducing traffic in tourist areas is important not only for preserving nature or protecting the environment, but it is also in many places an important attribute of sustainable tourism offerings, which increases added value for tourism.

The organisations that have been collecting and publishing timetables in the Julian Alps over the past three years are aware of the contribution of sustainable mobility to preserving nature, protecting the environment and sustainable development. As in the previous two years, this year for the third time in a row, we are issuing timetables that would facilitate and bring closer journeys by bus and train for both residents and visitors to the Julian Alps.

Since our mountains are also visited by many visitors – tourists, travellers, hikers … – from abroad, where sustainable tourism is also strongly emphasised, together CIPRA Slovenia and the Alpine Association of Slovenia have translated the timetables into English and issued an e-booklet of timetables in English, thereby enabling even wider use of bus and rail transport.
