Traffic regime on the Vršič road during construction works

10.04.2017
The Directorate of the Republic of Slovenia for Infrastructure is starting the renovation of the road on Vršič, R1-206, section 1043 Ruska cesta (Erika-Vršič) from km 4.275 to km 5.425. On this section, it is also necessary to repair a heavily deteriorated 9-meter-high wall (located on the section from km 4.320 to km 4.380). The works at height on the 5-meter-wide road section cannot be carried out other than with a complete road closure. The Directorate of the RS for Infrastructure has requested permission from the competent consenting authorities and Triglav National Park for the construction of a bypass road in the area of the deteriorated wall. Since the land is privately owned, the consent of the landowner is also required.

The contractor, company Inkaing d.o.o., with which a contract for the execution of the works worth 544,414.63 EUR has been signed, has already begun preparations for construction (site notification, preparation of economic-technical report, coordination of road closure,…). As it is a road running through high mountains, construction works can be carried out from late spring to early autumn, and the works must be organized under special conditions, as the space for maneuvering machines and construction site servicing (delivery/removal of machines, materials) is very limited. At the same time, when establishing traffic flow, the construction site must be organized to ensure basic safety for all, both those on the site and participants crossing the site, which in this specific case will extend over a 1.3 kilometer long stretch.

The Directorate of the RS for Infrastructure strives to complete the works on both the Kranjska Gora and Bovec sides of the pass in the shortest possible time. Therefore, the works on section 1028 Erika-Vršič-Trenta, where reconstruction of two bridges over the Šubica torrent and the torrent in Trenta is planned, are coordinated with the works on section 1043 (Erika-Vršič), and traffic during the works will be arranged via temporary Maybe bridges, alternately one-way with traffic lights.

Traffic regime on section 1043 Ruska cesta (Erika-Vršič) from km 4.275 to km 5.425:

18.4.2017 - 7.5.2017 Partial closure.

Alternating one-way guided traffic.

Occasional short-term full closures up to 1 hour.

Traffic allowed for passenger vehicles, buses and goods vehicles up to 7.5 tons.

8.5.2017 - 15.6.2017 For passenger vehicles and goods vehicles up to 7.5 tons, the same regime as stated above,

bus traffic will not be permitted (detour via Predel).

During the period from 8.5.2017 to 15.6.2017, a 5-day full closure for all traffic will be established, detour via Predel. The closure date will be announced subsequently, as it is linked to the dynamics of the works execution.

15.6.2017 - 18.9.2017 Partial closures (alternating one-way traffic, guided manually or with traffic lights).

From 18.9.2017 onwards, Full closure from Monday to Thursday between 8.00 and 17.00,

until on Fridays between 8.00 and 15.00.

weather conditions Traffic for all vehicles during weekdays possible from 17.00 in the afternoon

allow execution until 8.00 the next morning and on weekends.

of works.

Road closures cannot unfortunately be avoided due to the demanding work conditions, narrow road and machines that occupy practically the entire carriageway. In addition, works in high mountains can be carried out for a shorter period, as appropriate climatic conditions are necessary for the execution of individual works. Due to the partial closure regime, the works will presumably extend into 2018 as well. Closures in the following year depend on the works carried out this year.

We thank all drivers and users of the road over Vršič pass for their patience and understanding during the construction works.
