Trail from Uskovnica towards Velem Polje reopened
29.05.2023
The hiking trail leading from Uskovnica or from Rudno Polje via Gornja Planina Tosc to Vodnikov dom on Velem Polje is on the section Gornja Planina Tosc - Na Zagonu REOPENED AGAIN.
Course of events on the hiking trail (according to the record of the Administration for Protection and Rescue of Slovenia)
At 5:46, a hiker reported on the emergency number (SOS 112) that on the hiking trail before Vodnikov dom on Velem Polje, an active landslide had revealed an unexploded ordnance. The ordnance was located on a narrow passage of the trail that hikers regularly use, as there is no other safe path in this section. The Police Operational Communication Center notified the Alpine Association of Slovenia about the incident, which informed its members and published the information on its website.
A Police Aviation Unit helicopter flew to the location and delivered two police officers who secured the find site and closed the dangerous section of the trail. Then, the helicopter transported a member of the State Unit for Protection against Unexploded Ordnance (NUS) and a mountain rescuer from GRS Bohinj from Pokljuka to the find location, who ensured a safe descent. The found Yugoslav 75 mm artillery shell was prepared for transport according to procedure, secured, and carried in a designated bag to the quarry at Rudno Polje. During transport, Slovenian Army members with a service dog inspected the quarry area and advised those present to withdraw due to explosion hazard. Members of the State Unit for Protection against NUS, GRS Bohinj mountain rescuers, and Slovenian Army members secured the wider quarry area and safely destroyed the dangerous artillery shell with a controlled explosion.
The Administration for Protection and Rescue advises that upon finding unexploded ordnance, the notification center should be informed as soon as possible on phone number 112 or the police on 113.
Provide as much data as possible about the find location and the item. If circumstances allow, photograph the find with a mobile phone and send it to the operator in the call center.
When calling 112 or 113, provide data on who is calling, find location, what item it is with description, and if people and animals are endangered.
Secure the find site, do not touch the item, do not move or disassemble it. Leave the area where the dangerous item is by the same path you arrived.
