Triglav National Park Awarded

14.06.2007

The renovated Pocarjeva domačija, which serves as the information centre of Triglav National Park (TNP), has received the Europa Nostra diploma.

This is the European Union award for cultural heritage, presented at the end of
last week in Stockholm. At Pocarjeva domačija, located
in Zgornja Radovna, there is a museum collection, and numerous cultural events are also held in its premises.

Sophisticated use of traditional knowledge
In
the category of preserving architectural heritage, 110 projects from 32 European countries competed for
awards last year, of which 17 projects were awarded. Pocarjeva domačija was recognised for
the sophisticated use of traditional knowledge and materials in preserving
a rare and authentic example of 18th-century Alpine architecture, as well as
for preserving ethnological heritage and the related local income opportunities.

The homestead is considered one of the oldest in
the park, with a museum-arranged house where the collection
of exhibited objects presents life in the areas below Triglav from past
centuries to the present. The premises of this vernacular architecture also function as
an information point and event space, and on 22 June
the Europa Nostra diploma will be solemnly presented there.

Care for cultural heritage crosses borders
The European
Union introduced the cultural heritage award in 2002 as part of
the implementation of the Culture 2000 programme. The award is announced by Europa Nostra,
a pan-European organisation uniting 220 European
non-governmental organisations dedicated to preserving cultural heritage.
The award aims to promote high standards of conservation
and to encourage cross-border cooperation in the field of cultural heritage,
in connection with which it supports and encourages national and international
campaigns for the preservation, rescue and enhancement of European heritage.
