Two thousand mountaineers under Storžič

18.06.2017
A rainbow of experiences under Storžič attracted two thousand mountaineers.

If drops were still falling on Friday, Saturday brought sunny experiences - mountaineering, mountain biking, climbing, mountain rescue, nature conservation, creative and exploratory ones, which on 17 June 2017 at Dom pod Storžičem attracted around two thousand adults, young people and the youngest mountaineers, mountain bikers, climbers and other lovers of mountains and nature from all over Slovenia and beyond the border. The joyful crowd thus honoured the double mountaineering holiday - Day of Slovenian Mountaineering Experiences and Day of Gorenjska Mountaineers.

Mountaineering is one of the most popular leisure activities of Slovenes, so such a response to the double mountaineering holiday is not surprising. The Alpine Association of Slovenia (PZS), which will count 125 honourable springs next year, has been celebrating the Day of Slovenian Mountaineers for 35 years. For the sixth year, under the umbrella of the Day of Slovenian Mountaineering Experiences, the programme has been enriched with a full-day event for visitors of all generations, who this year also honoured the traditional Day of Gorenjska Mountaineers. In the organisation, together with partners, they joined forces PZS, Mountaineering Association (PD) Tržič and Municipality of Tržič.

All paths of mountaineers and mountain bikers who chose Tržič or Grahovše as starting points led to Dom pod Storžičem on the third June Saturday, mostly in the company of PZS guides, some set off towards the experiences on their own. In the vicinity of the popular mountain hut, a rainbow of experiences for young and old stretched out. That #SlovenijaPleza was proven by the hustle at the climbing wall, where a few breathtaking tricks to sports climbing enthusiasts and those who ventured into the vertical for the first time was shown by former national champion Jure Bečan. The youngest were thrilled by creative workshops Clean Our Mountains, geocaching for treasure, speed waste sorting and colouring and drawing of protected mountain plants, the older ones by a natural history-photographic hike in the vicinity of the hut and a sports-fun polygon. Through equipment and rescue vehicle they got to know the work of mountain rescuers from the GRS Tržič Association and with interest stopped at the stands where the mountaineering association, local associations and companies presented themselves. Many used their arrival in Gorenjska also to visit the Tržič Museum and explore the hidden corners of the medieval town. Val 202 also mingled among the mountaineers this year, so listeners across Slovenia could relive the lively pulse from under Storžič.

Under Storžič, the mountaineering anthem Oj, Triglav, moj dom sounded for the introduction to the main event, the all-Slovenian holiday was honoured with a solemn procession by flag bearers of 50 mountaineering associations. Welcome was wished to the joyful crowd of mountaineers from near and far by the President of the Alpine Association of Slovenia Bojan Rotovnik, proud that so many mountaineers gathered at the Slovenian mountaineering holiday, which is a unique confirmation that the mountaineering organisation is one of the largest non-governmental and sports organisations in Slovenia, President of the Inter-Association Committee of PD Gorenjske France Benedik, who wished the gathered a pleasant gathering in Gorenjska, President of PD Tržič Uroš Ahačič, thrilled by the crowd as Dom pod Storžičem has never experienced, and Mayor of Municipality of Tržič Borut Sajovic, who greeted mountaineering Slovenia and described the event as a beautiful promotion of one of the larger Slovenian municipalities. The bellows of the accordion was cheerfully stretched by local Rok Meglič, it smelled of mountaineering goodies, the ensemble Zarja took care of the real mountaineering fun.

That happiness is in meeting is proven time and again by the satisfied faces of participants of the day of Slovenian mountaineers, which traditionally also marks the beginning of the main mountaineering season. This until mid-September attracts the most visitors to the mountains, also thanks to the hospitable mountain huts, most of which are already open, the remaining high mountain ones by the end of June. The rhythm of the summer months will be co-shaped by the selection for the best mountain hut 2017 on the Siol.net web portal. Safe, secure and experiential on mountaineering paths was wished to the gathered mountaineers for farewell by the president of the mountaineering association Bojan Rotovnik.
