Vrata: Traffic Regulation
2.12.2024
General matters
New traffic regulations under the mountains lead to various traffic diversion events. Rok Feldin, the caretaker of Bivak 2, had a bold plan on Saturday, November 16, to visit the facility high above Vrata before winter in order to measure the window, tidy up a bit, and check what needs to be done next year. Since parking fees in Vrata were no longer to be paid from November 16 onwards, the date was quite ideal. The weather forecast too. Two days earlier, he had also announced his plans at a meeting.
On Friday morning, however, Boštjan called him and said that on the Municipality of Kranjska Gora's website there was a notice that the road to Vrata is closed from the 16th due to winter conditions. Given the sunny and warm weather, Rok assumed that at least 30 cm of snow had probably fallen in Vrata overnight. So he called the Kranjska Gora utility company to inquire about the conditions. He was told that the utility has nothing to do with the road closure, that the road is closed by the operator, as every year. The barrier was not mentioned during the entire conversation, so he concluded that it would probably be open and they could still carry out the work action.
On the mentioned Saturday morning, three gather at the AO parking lot – Michel, Luka, and Rok. They pick up Boštjan at Hrušica and head towards Vrata. They arrive in front of the closed barrier, which doesn't budge. Even after pressing the button on the post, the barrier remains horizontal, and on the display, with “pixelated” letters it shows: “Only for permit holders.” Of course, they didn't have it; they hadn't applied for it the day before at the municipality or utility because they didn't know they needed it, as it had been announced that entry after November 16 would be free. Since it was said that the barrier and the road closure are not correlated, after venting some frustration, they turn around. The expedition soon renames from a work action to a group tour, and so, at Boštjan's suggestion, they drive to Krma, … the full report is on AO Jesenice. How the “rampart and cache” issue will affect climbing in the Wall and walls above Vrata, skiing, hiking, alpinism will be shown by time anyway,…
