In the basins of the high mountains, weak layers may be present in the old snow cover, say experts from the meteorological forecasting office.
In the area of the Styrian Hills, the avalanche danger is moderate, 2nd degree, on the European five-degree scale of avalanche release danger, announced the Office for Meteorological Forecasts, which operates within the framework of the Slovenian Environment Agency.
On steep meadows with windpacked snow, a snow avalanche can be triggered. With clearing and gradual warming, the snow will become soaked especially in the afternoon, small wet snow avalanches will release spontaneously.
On bare ground, up to 40 centimetres of snow fell in Kobansko, and 30 centimetres on Pohorje. Due to the strengthened northeast wind, snow drifts formed on the edges of meadows and near ridges. Solar radiation on Friday afternoon will soak the snow, today it will be sunny, still cloudy in the lowlands. The danger of spontaneous release of wet slab avalanches will appear above low cloud cover already in the morning and increase further in the afternoon with warming. On Sunday it will clear in the lowlands as well, so slab avalanches will occur there too. It will gradually become warmer. Clearing from the west and north, low cloudiness will persist in the lowlands, meteorologists forecast.
Weak layers in the old snow cover
Meanwhile, in the Alps, in Koroška and in the Karawanks, the snow cover is mostly stable. However, in some places in the high mountains, especially on fresh wind drifts of windpacked snow, a small slab avalanche can be triggered under greater load. There is little snow, peaks and ridges are scoured bare in places. In the last deterioration, around 10 centimetres of new snow fell, and on sun-facing slopes below 2000 metres above sea level on bare ground.
In the basins of the high mountains, weak layers may be present in the old snow cover. On Saturday and Sunday it will be sunny, even warmer and with even less wind. The avalanche danger will remain low.
