Smučišče Koralpe (Koralpenparkplatz) - Kleiner Speikkogel (Golica / Koralpe) (via Großer Speikkogel)

Access to starting point:
a) Via Dravograd: We cross the border crossing Vič and continue through Št. Andrež (St. Andrä) to the town of Volšperk (Wolfsberg). In the town, traffic signs for Koralpe direct us to the right. The ascending mountain road then takes us through the settlements of Št. Štefan (St. Stefan), Maildorf and Rieding to the large central parking lot below the ski resort – Smučišče Koralpe (Koralpenparkplatz).
Note: Parking at the central parking lot is subject to a fee. The daily parking fee is 5 €, the payment machine is located at the entrance to the parking lot.
b) Via motorway (A2): We leave the Graz–Celovec motorway at the exit Volšperk jug (Wolfsberg Süd). At the intersection we turn right towards the town centre, then at the shopping centre turn right again for Koralpe. The ascending mountain road then takes us through the settlements of Št. Štefan (St. Stefan), Maildorf and Rieding to the large central parking lot below the ski resort – Smučišče Koralpe (Koralpenparkplatz).

Route description:
At the beginning of the large parking lot we turn sharply right onto the road, which quickly takes us to a left hairpin bend where there is another, smaller parking lot. From here we continue along the asphalt road, which is closed to public traffic, in the direction of the Koralpenhaus hut and the summit of Großer Speikkogel. The marked path a little higher cuts two hairpin bends, then we continue along the road to the point where it turns right.
At the point where the road turns right, we continue straight ahead and continue the ascent along the ski slope. In summer there is an extensive grazing area here, so some caution is required when encountering livestock. On this section we ascend along a well-trodden path, and the markings are fairly sparse.
Higher up the path gradually shifts from the northern to the south-western slopes and approaches the road we left lower down. This is followed by a traverse ascent to the right with beautiful views of Austrian Carinthia. When we reach the asphalt road near the Koralpenhaus hut, we simply cross it and are already at the renovated mountain hut.
We bypass the mountain hut on the left side and continue along the marked path that leads to the right of the asphalt road. At first we walk fairly gently across the scenic grassy plateaus of Golica, but soon we begin to ascend transversely across the slope, which gradually becomes somewhat steeper.
As we approach the summit, the path passes right next to the fence of a massive military complex with an Austrian army radar (recognisable by the large white dome) and a tall television transmitter. Here we return to the asphalt road and continue along its lower, right side past both structures. Behind the fence of the military area we turn left and after a few dozen steps of moderate ascent we reach the spacious and scenic summit where a cross stands.
From the highest peak of the range we descend towards the south-east, where we quickly reach the saddle between the summits of Großer Speikkogel and Kleiner Speikkogel.
At the saddle with numerous directional signs we continue straight ahead towards the south-east onto an unmarked path. This begins to ascend again and quickly takes us onto the fairly gentle ridge of Kleiner Speikkogel. With beautiful views we continue along the ridge to the summit a few minutes away, where a metal monument with a statue and a summit register box stand.
