Access to starting point:
Via the border crossing Jelšane or Pasjak, drive onto the motorway towards Rijeka. Exit the motorway at the Opatija junction and continue on the expressway towards Pula, which you exit at the first Opatija exit. Follow signs for Lovran. Drive along the coastal road to Mošćenička Draga, where at the intersection turn slightly right towards Mošćenice. Parking is available at the parking lot in Mošćenice or lower along the road.
Route description:
From the starting point, continue along the road past the Perun inn and soon a sign directs you right onto the path. After a short ascent between houses, it leads to a junction with a chapel nearby. The marked path goes left, but continue right into a short stretch of forest. From here on, the path is marked only with K signs. After about 10 minutes of uneven ascent on a fairly rocky path, you arrive at the chapel and church of the Holy Cross on Kalvarija.
Bypass the church on the left and continue along the path leading along the dry stone wall. The path ascends gently through the forest. Further ahead, the forest thins slightly and you reach a small clearing where the path descends slightly. The first views open towards the Učka ridge and the sea. After a short ascent, step back onto the marked path to the Chapel of Christ the King in the hamlet Marići. Then step onto the asphalt road leading through a small hamlet. After a longer ascent, briefly leave the road and take the marked shortcut back to the road and into the hamlet Mihani. Signs direct you right onto the path. Bypass the last house on the left and enter the forest. The path ascends gently to the road, where there is a marked junction. Left along the road leads to Kremenjak, but continue straight ahead along the path. After 15 minutes on the gentle path, arrive at the Votive Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with a bench nearby. Continue along the path that ascends unevenly. Higher up, the path runs along the left side above a small gully, then turns left onto a scenic meadow. After about half an hour of ascent from the chapel, step onto the road and follow it right. Straight ahead is the marked path to Perun or towards the Učka ridge. From here, the path is no longer marked. Soon a path branches right to a small viewpoint from which the Gulf of Rijeka and Cres island are visible. After 20 minutes walking along the eastern slope of Perun, reach the turning area and turn left onto the meadow. After a few minutes, it leads to a junction near a small pond. Here step back onto the marked path. Straight across the meadow leads to Perun (another 15 minutes), but continue right. The path begins to descend sideways and in 10 minutes reach the road. After a few steps, reach the junction where the previously mentioned marked path bypassing Perun joins from opposite, but turn right. The path leads past a hunting observation hut and descends slightly behind it. The path then turns right into dense forest. Continue across a short grassy section and soon reach the saddle or main Učka ridge. Straight ahead the path leads to Vojak via Mala Učka and to Podmaj, but continue left. Along a level and scenic path that becomes somewhat steeper towards the end, in 20 minutes we reach the scenic summit of Balin.
From the summit, continue along the grassy ridge and descend to a small saddle, then step onto the road. The path then cuts a small bend and we reach the chapel visible on the right. Along the level road in a few minutes we reach Lovska koča Perun and then the information board on the falcon observation point. Through a short woodland stretch, pass a bench with table to the monument and summit register for Brgud. To the actual Brgud summit, a short descent and ascent to the unmarked shrub-covered top located slightly right of the marked path remains.
