Description:
St. Anthony of Padua's Church stands on the picturesque Rožni Hill above Idrija, visible from all sides of the town and its surroundings, giving it a special urban character. It was built in 1678 on the order of the then mining director Kaspar Baron Lichtenheim, who wanted to provide the miners, exposed to numerous dangers, with a patron saint in St. Anthony of Padua.
Originally, there was a shrine with the saint's image on this site, later a wooden chapel that miners often visited. Architecturally, it follows a rural Baroque design: it consists of a rectangular nave with chancel, a flat-ended presbytery, a bell tower from 1805, and a sacristy with oratory.
The interior is adorned with altars by master Luka Čeferin (1837), organ by Peter Rojc (1847), and Stations of the Cross from 1866. In 1766, a Calvary with 13 chapels of the Way of the Cross and a chapel of Christ's tomb was added next to the church, together forming an important sacral heritage.
The church has survived numerous natural disasters, including earthquakes and lightning in 1886, and was renovated after the 1998 earthquake. Today it serves as a branch church of the Idrija Parish, where services are held on the feast days of St. Anthony (January 17 and June 13) and on the Nativity of St. John the Baptist (June 24).
It is a popular spot for walks, pilgrimages, and enjoying the view of Idrija and the confluence of the Idrijca and Nikova rivers, symbolizing the rich mining and spiritual history of the area.
