At more than 500 meters altitude, overlooking the ancient Casinum, the Volsci and then the Romans had already built majestic temples to dedicate to the gods. On the remains of those pagan buildings, Benedict of Norcia, in 529, built a small oratory, destined to become the mother house of the Benedictines and one of the greatest centers of cultural irradiation in the West.
