© CLAUDIO MORTINI™◊ The Fair of the Dead in Perugia is considered one of the largest and most important fairs in Italy.
It dates back to the medieval period and its name was then “Fair of All Saints”, as it was held during that religious feast period. It was part of a rich calendar of fair and mercantile activities present in Umbria during the medieval and Renaissance ages. Only starting from the 1600s, the Fair of All Saints was named “of the deceased”, while in the 1800s it took its current name of “Fair of the Dead”.
