The Miramare Castle was built between 1856 and 1860 as a residence for Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg, later Emperor of Mexico, and his wife Charlotte of Belgium. The Archduke personally oversaw both the design of the residence and the layout of the vast park (over 22 hectares), an English and Italian garden rich in rare plants, sculptures and ponds, descending with wide steps towards the sea.
