Description: Thanks to its glacier, Vignemale is one of the most complete three-thousanders in the Pyrenees.
We sleep at Barrage d'Ossoue, accessible by car from Gavarnie.
We begin the ascent skirting the dam on the right along a very marked path and cross the beautiful plain to a bridge at the end of the valley. Here we cross the river from the Ossoue glacier melt. After crossing the bridge the path starts to climb and in some switchbacks we pass right above a waterfall. The valley narrows and becomes more spectacular. Further ahead the path flattens a bit and soon we reach Pont de Neige, a permanent snowfield that forms a kind of bridge over the river, hence its name. The path climbs quite a bit again after this point and passes through a more airy area. Then we descend a bit and pass the stream coming down from Montferrat. More switchbacks and we reach a green area ideal for camping.
