Description: © CLAUDIO MORTINI™◊ Overlooking what is called the Gulf of Gold, namely an extensive crescent-shaped bay characterized by golden sand, Vasto is famous for being one of the most characteristic places in Abruzzo. Known in antiquity as Histonium, Vasto is a historic and fascinating town located in the southern part of Abruzzo on the border with the Molise region. Thanks to its position, Vasto has been considered since antiquity an important maritime village born from the union of small Adriatic coastal villages. Sacked several times, the city was destroyed in the early years of the 800 AD and then rebuilt by separating two different localities, “Guasto d’Aymone” (i.e. “City of Aymone of Dordona”) and “Guasto Gisone”, which were then reunited only in the 14th century. Guasto was a territorial subdivision used during the Lombard domination, but it is from this term that the name Vasto derives. The different dominations that have followed over time have left their mark in the city and this historical heritage is now visible walking through the streets of Vasto. However, Vasto is mostly famous as a seaside resort thanks to its beautiful beaches (awarded several times with the Blue Flag title) and thanks to the presence of the suggestive Trabocchi Coast. - https://turismo.abruzzo.it/chieti/vasto/
