After the approach from Tristach near Lienz, the tour starts from the parking lot at the Dolomitenhütte, approx. 1.600 m, on the Egerländerweg to the Karlsbader Hütte, 2.261 m, further over the Ari-Schübel-Steig to the Große Sandspitze, 2.770 m, and back over the Karlsbader Hütte and the Rudi-Eller-Steig to the parking lot.
