We had a hotel in Cavallino-Treporti and took the ferry from Punta Sabbione to Venice.
I think this is the best way to travel to Venice. From the water, you already get a nice view of the city and it's completely stress-free. In Venice, you arrive at the San Marco - San Zaccaria station and are right in the middle of the action.
