Description: For the 3rd Advent weekend, we selected a hike in St. Margarethen, the municipality with around 2800 inhabitants. This Advent hike leads us to the Calvary Chapel erected in 1856, which is about 20 minutes from the starting point, and continues along the Gleinberg. The Gleinberg is an elongated, mostly forested ridge that extends eastward and rises to nearly 900 m altitude. The exposed position of the Calvary Chapel promises a beautiful view of St. Margarethen and surroundings, although the forest around the chapel is quite dense. Currently in the chapel, there is a lovingly crafted nativity scene and two Christmas trees decorated with straw stars. The hike mostly follows forest roads, with caution advised on the few steep sections – especially when there is snow. For a short Advent hike, we recommend going up only to the Calvary Chapel and returning down along the Way of the Cross.
