VALCANALE-CORNA PIANA WEST SUMMIT 2302 m

From the village of Valcanale in Val Seriana, we drive to a clearing on the left side of the road, beyond which a sign and then a barrier prohibit passage in case of snow. We proceed along the icy road to a metal gate, junction for the disused ski lifts, where we take CAI no. 220, a forest road towards Rifugio Alpe Corte. We follow the forest road to the intersection with a path marked for Rifugio Lago Branchino, which leads us to Baita Bassa del Monte Neel (or Baita Nevel) at 1565 m. With crampons on, we resume CAI no. 220 leading to Lago Branchino at 1784 m, passing Baita Neel di Mezzo at 1614 m and Rifugio Lago Branchino at 1796 m, located on the right just above the lake. We continue the ascent via CAI no. 218 along the right shore of the basin, slightly uphill to Passo di Branchino at 1821 m. We turn left and proceed to Bocchetta di Corna Piana where we reach the nearby cross at 2078 m. We return to the Bocchetta and descend the path crossing Val Mandrone, the flower trail, which we leave at the bottom of the valley and keeping to the left along a steep traverse, we reach Passo di Corna Piana at 2130 m. We continue left and climb the steep slope up to the ridge leading to the west summit. Crampons off and after passing the modest rocky monolith, we are at the summit of Corna Piana at 2302 m. We return to the parking lot retracing the same outbound itinerary.
