Description:
The oldest part of present-day Sopron was located around St. Michael Hill. A sanctuary may have stood here earlier, and in its place, the tower and nave of today's church were built when Sopron became a Free Royal Town. The first written mention of the church is from 1278, and from that year, the list of city parish priests is also known. From 1450, the transept and sanctuary were added. The church was completed in its present size in 1484. According to some assumptions, King Matthias also attended its consecration. With its dimensions and bold proportions, St. Michael's Church is the country's most significant Gothic work after the Matthias Church in Buda.
