Description: Makalu is with 8485 m the fifth highest mountain on Earth. Its name comes from Sanskrit and means in German 'the big Black' (Maha Kala). It is located at 27° 53′ 3″ N, 87° 5′ 20″ E, only 22 kilometers as the crow flies separate it from the world's highest mountain, the 8850 meter high Mount Everest, which is further east in Solu Khumbu. Makalu itself lies in the middle of the Makalu-Barun National Park and Conservation Area established in 1992, a 2330 square mile area that connects to Nepal's further west Sagarmatha National Park and Tibet's Qomolangma Natural Reserve to the north.
