Description:
We park the car at the Istituto medico Putti just above the village of Chiave in Cortina D’Ampezzo and climb (not on a marked path but on a grassy track) northeast until we meet the wide cycle path 211. We keep left in the wood until we cross path 202 which climbs to the right; we follow it and continue gaining altitude always having as reference the descent gully of the Ferrata Strobel. The gully descends to our left, we abandon it and climb right towards the evident ledge that rises diagonally. Wearing the helmet and ferrata kit we are ready to reach the start of the Ferrata Terza Cengia del Pomagagnon, also called Sentiero Attrezzato Zumeles. The start of the ledge is not protected by cable and rises quite steeply but not exposed, climbing clinging to the rocky walls. We find the first stretch of cable, secure ourselves and start climbing; here the exposure starts to be very marked and the ledge becomes much narrower. Equipped sections alternate with unequipped ones, sometimes even in decidedly exposed points; the terrain does not facilitate the climb which takes place mainly on gravel bottom with poor grip. Therefore, firm foot and absolute absence of vertigo are recommended. After a descending stretch we reach a very panoramic point and in front of us we see the last stretch of very exposed diagonal ledge that will lead us to the col (2,250m) separating Punta Erbing from Croda di Cestellis. From the col we decide to reach the nearby Punta Erbing at 2,301m, from here the panorama is incredible: Monte Cristallo, Tofane, Faloria, Cortina D’Ampezzo and the Ampezzane Dolomiti.
