Description:
03-03-2021: Monte Rite (2,183 m) is a mountain in the Dolomites (Dolomiti di Zoldo), rising densely forested between Venas and Vodo di Cadore on the right bank of the Boite, above the Chiusa narrows, while its southern slope overlooks Cibiana, a town world-famous for its murals. The summit ridge consists of a long backbone connecting it to Col Alto via Forcella Deona, also called Forcella de Rite, separating the two summits; from the top, the view is grandiose over the Dolomites of Valle del Boite, Val Zoldana, and Centro Cadore. On the ridge are remains of fortifications built before World War I, restored for the construction of the Museo nelle Nuvole on the initiative of renowned mountaineer Reinhold Messner, completed with funding from the European Community and Veneto region. The museum, Europe's highest, is part of the Messner Mountain Museum circuit and houses a large gallery of paintings depicting the Dolomites from Romanticism to the present day. It also features a collection of items and documents from great mountaineers illustrating the evolution of rock climbing. The museum is open in summer (June to late September). Adjacent is Rifugio Dolomites, open also in winter. In summer, a paid shuttle service connects the museum and refuge to Forcella Cibiana, home to Rifugio Remauro.
