Situated on an enchanting hill of 564 m above sea level, Montalcino still preserves intact its charm as an ancient medieval village. Its territory, which is part of the Artistic Natural and Cultural Park of Val d'Orcia, is covered by vineyards (from which high-quality wines like the famous Brunello are obtained), olive groves and woods where holm oaks prevail and from whose Latin term (Ilex) the name Montalcino probably derives, Mons Ilcinus.
