Description: Furggen is a 3,492 m mountain in the Pennine Alps, along the border between Italy and Switzerland. Furggen is particularly known because in 1952 a cable car was built connecting the mountain to Plan Maison. The system was a single span 2,887 meters long, and the engineer who designed it, Professor Zignoli, had to take into account even the earth's curvature. From the summit there was a tunnel descending to the left, or one could exit directly from the station and go straight onto the slope. This exit was however permanently closed after a fatal accident. The cabins initially held 25 people, then in the 1970s their capacity was reduced to 20. In 1993 the cable car was closed due to an accident to a traction rope, but also because Cervino S.p.A. was in considerable economic difficulties at that time. Subsequently many criticisms arose due to the closure of the cable car, and even today its reconstruction is requested.
