"The Vallons de la Meije area at La Grave is unique in the world. Just a cable car that takes skiers to 3200m. Up there, a small ski lift serves a piste on the glacier. Apart from these facilities, nothing or rather... everything: off-piste routes on glacier, in bowls, couloirs, forest. Nearly 2000m of pure mountain drop. Here outside the single marked piste, no securing of the area, no pisteurs. Skiers progress under their own responsibility. Like this domain, the system set up by La Grave is, to our knowledge, unique in the world. We are four patrollers, employed by the commune. Our role: to monitor the safety conditions of the domain, to play a gentle prevention role with clients and an advisory role to the commune for opening or not the cable car."
