Description: The castle was first mentioned in a document of the Lamprecht monastery in 1100. It was probably built by Dietrich I of Hohenberg. He was a son of Leutold of Hohenstaff. In the battles between Emperor Frederick III and King Matthias Corvinus, Hans III of Hohenberg made his castles Merkenstein, Hohenberg, and Kreisbach available to the Hungarians in 1482. A siege of Hohenberg by an imperial force was unsuccessful. With Erasmus of Hohenberg, the family died out in 1529. The lordship passed to Wilhelm von Roggendorf, who was married to Anna, a daughter of Erasmus. In 1535, the castle came to Sebald Pögl, Baron of Reiffenstein and Arenberg.
